June 25, 2019 marks the 44th anniversary of the emergency declared in the country by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The emergency lasted for 21 months starting from June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977. The Emergency was officially announced by the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under article 352(1) of the Constitution. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to remember the leaders who fought against Indira Gandhi’s declaration and this did not go down well with the opposition.
