Retired captain Muhammad Safdar Awan was born in a small village in Mansehra to a middle-class Sufi family. After completing his early education he joined the Pakistan army. He had been assigned as a security officer to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz. Safdar and Maryam got married in 1992. After his retirement from the Pak army, he joined civil services and had given the charge of Lahore Model Town assistant commissioner.
