Ramadan or Ramzan is considered to be the most pious month for followers of Islam. As per legends, it was in the holy month of Ramzan that the holy Quran was first revealed to Prophet Mohammed. Muslims across the globe fast every day from dawn to dusk this month. Muslims in Karnataka and Kerala begin the observance of Ramzan from April 24 as the crescent moon was sighted on April 23. The rest of India will begin fasting from April 25 this year. April 24 marks 30th day of Sha’ban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar before the holy month of Ramzan. Months in the Islamic calendar are either 29 or 30 days depending on the moon-sighting. In Saudi Arabia too, Ramadan begins from April 24, 2020. While praying for five-times a day is compulsory for Muslims throughout the year, Ramzan has special Taraweeh prayers which are offered in groups. In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic this year, Muslims across the globe have been advised to pray at home. Ramadan signifies fasting, charity and spirituality for the Muslim community.
