S. Korea's leading environmental experts on Thursday gathered at the K Hotel in Seoul for the Global Korea Convention 2020 to discuss the issue of climate change and sustainable solutions.
Former climate change ambassador at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Choi Jae-chul, delivered a keynote speech, addressing how the country must proceed in the post COVID-19 era to reach its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
"Korea's pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 is a landmark declaration that will bring about significant political, economic and social change in the nation."
Experts say that, although achieving net-zero carbon emissions is a huge challenge, certain steps can be made in order for the country to accomplish it.
"The Korea Energy Economics Institute highlighted the three Ds required to transition towards a greener future: decentralization, decarbonization and digitalization."
And particular emphasis has been placed on decentralizing environmental conservation efforts so that private companies can contribute more.
"To encourage corporate investment, we need the government to ease its regulations so that the private sector can freely enter the market."
The session ended with a group debate on the prospects of a green economy in Korea.
Support was given for the country's pursuit of carbon neutrality as it aims to play a leading international role in sustainable development post-COVID-19.
