Makar Sankranti is one of the most significant days in the Hindu calendar celebrating the movement of the Sun from Dakshinayan (Southern Hemisphere) to Uttarayana (Northern Hemisphere). The transition of the Sun or Uttarayana, when days get longer and the winter season starts ebbing, signals the start of the harvest season in India. Kite flying is also a major part of Makar Sankranti, although the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan indulge in this with a lot more enthusiasm.

आज देशभर में मकर संक्रांति का पर्व मनाया जा रहा है. हिन्दू धर्म में मकर संक्रांति का विशेष महत्‍व है. हिन्‍दु धर्म में सदियों से मनाए जा रहे इस पर्व को दान-पुण्‍य और शुभ के आरंभ का प्रतीक माना गया है. संक्रांति पर ही सूर्य की दिशा बदलती है. इस दिन भगवान सूर्य कुंभ राशि छोड़कर मकर राशि में प्रवेश करते है. जब सूर्य देव मकर राशि पर प्रवेश करते हैं तब मकर संक्रांति का पर्व मनाया जाता है और इसी के साथ सभी शुभ काम शुरू हो जाते हैं. इस त्योहार पर देश के कई हिस्सों में पतंग उड़ाने की परंपरा है. इसलिए इसे पतंग पर्व भी कहा जाता है.
