According to the Hindu calendar, 30 days of every month are divided into 2 sides of 15 days each on the basis of lunar art - Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. On the 15th day of the Hindu month, the last day of Shukla Paksha is called Purnima, on this day the moon is seen in its full size. This day has great importance in Indian life. Normally, every month's full moon is celebrated with some festival or fast.

हिन्दू पंचांग के अनुसार हर माह के 30 दिन को चन्द्र कला के आधार पर 15-15 दिन के 2 पक्षों में बांटा गया है- शुक्ल पक्ष और कृष्ण पक्ष। हिंदू माह के 15 वें दिवस शुक्ल पक्ष के अंतिम दिन को पूर्णिमा कहते हैं इस दिन चन्द्रमा अपने पूरे आकार में नज़र आता है। इस दिन का भारतीय जनजीवन में बहुत ही महत्व हैं। सामान्यता हर माह की पूर्णिमा को कोई न कोई पर्व अथवा व्रत अवश्य ही मनाया जाता हैं।
