This is a Sanskrit devotional song, Shivanamavalyashtakam, composed by the great sage Adi Shankaracharya. The song is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Meaning in English:

1. Shambhu, who has a crest-moon, who is the destroyer of Madana (cupid), who holds a trident in His hand, who is static, who is revered by the mountain king Himalaya, who is the Lord of Girija (Parvati), who is the supreme Lord, who is the Lord of every living thing, who destroys the fears of the bereaved, and who is the Lord of the universe! Save me from the dense miseries of this world.


2. Rudra, who is dear to Parvati, who has moon on the forehead, who is the leader of ghosts, who is the Lord of tormentors, who is chanted by Himalaya, who is Vamadeva (a form of Shiva), who destroys the universe at the end of Kalpa (one cycle of creation), who holds the bow Pinaaka, and who is the Lord of the universe! Save me from the dense miseries of this world.

3. Shiva, who is the Lord of this world, who undertakes auspicious tasks (Shankara), who is revered by demi-Gods, who has Ganga flowing in His tresses, who is the leader of tormentors, who is the Lord of Nandi and Baanasura, who is the enemy of Andhakasura, who absolves, who is the Lord of every world, and who is the Lord of the universe! Save me from the dense miseries of this world.

4. King of Varanasi city, who is the Lord of Manikarnika, who is superior to every warrior, who destroyed the sacrifice of Daksha, who is powerful, who rules over 'Gana's, who knows everything, who dwells inside everyone’s heart, and who is the Lord of the universe! Save me from the dense miseries of this world.

5. Shiva, the beauty of Gauri, the greatest God of the universe, O Lord I bow to You. You the Master of this samsaar (the world). I bow to You, Oh Shiva, you are the remover of all indigence and misery. Save me from the dense miseries of this world.
