Eleven Covid-19 patients who were in the ICU died at a government hospital in Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati on May 10 evening after the supply of medical oxygen was disrupted. The deaths have been reported at a time when India is fighting a deadly second Covid-19 wave & shortage of medical oxygen has emerged as a key challenge. Disturbing visuals captured the chaos inside the wards at SVR Ruia Hospital as medical staff tried to save lives. The hospital has a capacity of over 1,100 beds; there are over 100 patients in the ICU & 400 on oxygen beds. About 30 doctors were immediately rushed into the ICU to attend to the patients. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has condoled the deaths & ordered a probe into the incident. In the last few weeks several disturbing stories on hospitals in India scrambling to get medical oxygen have made global headlines amid the battle against the novel coronavirus pandemic. India has logged over 2.29 crore coronavirus cases since the pandemic broke; about 3.29 lakh cases were reported on May 10. Andhra Pradesh has reported over 13.02 lakh cases so far; close to 15,000 infections were recorded on May 10.
