Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters as they marched toward the government house. The rally was led by student protest group free youth which has drawn thousands of supporters since last year. They're calling on Prime Minister Prayuth to step down and for the government to import mRNA covid vaccines. They also want the budget of the monarchy and the military to be cut.
The protest has come as Thailand is facing a surge in covid-19 cases, the country reporting a record high over the weekend. The country has recorded more than 400 thousand covid cases and three thousand deaths with more than 90% of cases and 95% of deaths occurring since April.
