Elevated stress hormones linked to higher blood pressure risk

In a study of more than 400 adults with normal blood pressure, those who had high levels of stress hormones detected in their urine were more likely to develop high blood pressure over the next 6-7 years. Cortisol is a steroid hormone that is released during stress. Higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol were also linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke. Stress is a key factor contributing to the risk of hypertension and cardiovascular events. A person's mind can positively or negatively affect risks for heart disease and strokes.
