Barbados, the Caribbean island nation, declared itself as the world's newest republic. It severed centuries-old ties with the British monarchy. It removed Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state. The royal Standard flag that represents the queen was lowered in Bridgetown. Sandra Mason, current governor general, was inaugurated as the first president. Prince Charles had reached Barbados ahead of the celebrations. He attended the Pride of Nationhood ceremony.
