Adharma is formed by combining "a" and "dharma," and literally means "not-dharma." It refers to something that is immoral, sinful, wrong, wicked, unjust, unbalanced, or unnatural. According to Bhagavata Purana verse 6.1.40, the Yamaduta responded: the religious principles prescribed in the Vedas constitute Dharma, while those that do not constitute Adharma. Adharma is translated as chaos, disorder, and non-harmonious by Ariel Glucklich, and it is explained as the polar opposite of Dharma. According to Glucklich, adharma is not the polar opposite of Dharma or completely unethical in Indian philosophy. Rather, it is a complex functional subjective term, similar to dharma, with varying degrees of meaning depending on circumstances, purpose, and context.
