High waves caused by a huge volcanic eruption near Tonga led to an oil spill off the coast of Peru. The oil spill has been described as the worst ecological disaster to hit the country in recent history. As per an AFP report, the leak occurred while an oil tanker was discharging crude for the La Pampilla refinery owned by Madrid-based Repsol SA on January 15. Peru has demanded compensation from Repsol. Visuals showed blackened beaches and dozens of dead seabirds drenched in oil.
