The history of Rajya Sabha dates back to 1919. An upper house was created in British India at that time. Then it was called the Council of State. After independence, the Rajya Sabha was formed on 3 April 1952. On 23 August 1954, its name was changed from Council of State to Rajya Sabha.

राज्यसभा का इतिहास 1919 से मिलता है। ब्रिटिश इंडिया में उस समय एक ऊपरी सदन बनाया गया था। तब इसे काउंसिल ऑफ स्टेट कहा जाता था। आजादी के बाद 3 अप्रैल 1952 को राज्यसभा का गठन किया गया। 23 अगस्त 1954 को इसका नाम काउंसिल ऑफ स्टेट से बदलकर राज्यसभा कर दिया गया।
