The Mystery Meat was formed in 1968 by students at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois. It all started when guitarist Ron O'Dell asked his classmates to help him record some of the songs he had composed. He was joined by Dick Leighninger on vocals, Bob Rentz on keyboards, Wayne Joplin on bass and Gary Walden on drums. The result of their collaboration was the album "Profiles". An interesting story is connected with the name of the group. The fact is that in the college where they studied, meat was served every Wednesday evening. The atmosphere in the dining room was dim, there were candles on the table, and the meat was richly flavored with green gravy, which made it difficult to make out if it was meat at all. And the guys, without hesitation, decided to use this joke, which could often be heard from the lips of students: "Today again" Mystical Meat ". Due to a limited budget, the band recorded the album in secret in their college basement in 1968. They had only one reel-to-reel tape deck, but thanks to the cavernous space of the basement, they got an unusual and unique sound. It is almost impossible to find the first edition of the record, since only 25 copies were made, each of which, today, can cost about 6,000 dollars.
