Gustave de Ponton d'Amécourt, a French inventor, is said to have originated the term "helicopter" to describe his little steam-powered flyer. The word "helicopter" is derived from the Greek words "helikos" (helix) and "pteron" (wing) (wing).
It means'spiral copter' when put together and approximately translated into English. This term was created on May 7, 1863, according to Timetoast.
