An angry Cristiano Ronaldo stormed off the pitch and refused to clap Manchester United's away support as his first start in the Premier League under Erik ten Hag ended in a dismal 4-0 defeat at Brentford.

Ronaldo, visibly frustrated after seeing his team suffer an embarrassing loss, did not shake Ten Hag's hand and appeared to have a terse exchange with assistant coach Steve McClaren before leaving the field at the Brentford Community Stadium.

The wantaway Portuguese star, who started a game for the first time since telling the club he wanted to leave, threw his hands up in the air and walked straight past his manager without a passing glance.

It came after United reached yet another new low, with Ronaldo merely a passenger as United went four goals down inside 35 minutes.

Ronaldo could only watch on as an error from David de Gea allowed Josh Dasilva to open the scoring before Mathias Jensen robbed Christian Eriksen of the ball to make it 2-0, while Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo completed the scoring in a scarcely believable first half.

His only notable contribution was a shot that flew comfortably over the bar from 20 yards out.

While Ronaldo looked sharper in the second half, he was unable to inspire an unlikely comeback as Brentford comfortably saw out a stunning victory which heaps more misery on United.

Ronaldo informed United he wanted to leave the club earlier in transfer the window, but after several of Europe's elite clubs distanced themselves from a potential transfer, he looks set to stay at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo, who scored 24 goals for United last season, came on as a second-half substitute in the 2-1 defeat to Brighton last week.

With Ronaldo's future at the club still far from certain, despite a lack of interested parties, United have been linked with a number of transfer targets which have drawn criticism from supporters.
