temperatures left California teetering on
the edge of ordering rolling blackouts.
States in the Western U.S. are struggling
through one of the hottest and longest
September heat waves on record.
Last week, temperatures began soaring, and the
National Weather Service (NWS) warned that
the heat wave could continue through September 9.
In California's state capital of Sacramento,
temperatures hit an all-time high, reaching
116 degrees Fahrenheit on September 6. .
The previous record high for that
day was 96 degrees Fahrenheit
and was set in 1944.
In Salt Lake City, temperatures lingered about 20 degrees higher than normal, reaching as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit, the hottest day in September since 1874.
Despite warnings, California's electric grid
managed to handle record-breaking
demand of 56,061 megawatts. .
Heat-related outages were reported in
the San Francisco Bay area and in Silicon Valley
with no word on when power would be restored. .
