The Prime Minister is expressing his hope that when citizens "demand wage and salary increases," they " will understand clearly that this country is only a small vulnerable unit, in a large, volatile international market."

He made the call as trade unions continue to reject the Chief Personnel Officer's four per cent salary increase offer for the Public Service and the wider public sector.

The Prime Minister raised the issue in his Republic Day address.
