Cows are considered sacred by the Hindu community. They consider these animals as equivalent to mothers for nourishing humanity. On Govatsa Dwadashi, people worship cows. The festival is celebrated annually on the twelfth day of the Krishna Paksha in the Hindu lunar month of Aswin. In Maharashtra, people celebrate the event as Vasu Baras, commemorating the beginning of Diwali. Gujarat celebrates the festival as Vagh Baras or Bach Baras.
