As I mentioned earlier, marketing on Instagram is NOT about making direct sales. Instead, the way to make a healthy return on investment (ROI) is by using 'Influencer Marketing'.

Instagram is perfect for this approach. Here's why:

First of all Instagram has a massive reach. According to the Pew Research Center, Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world. In fact, it’s the second most popular social media platform after Facebook – who acquired Instagram for approximately a billion Dollars in cash and stock back in April 2012. It's estimated that 32 percent of internet users in the US are on Instagram.

There's also a high engagement rate. This is probably because the platform was designed to be used exclusively on smartphones. It's just so easy to flick through photos on Instagram when you've got a spare moment – like waiting for a bus, or some other time when you'd just be bored. If people are looking at YOUR photos, and liking and sharing them, then that's going to spread your message far and wide. This ties into building a following like we talked about the other day.

The more influence you have, the more opportunities come your way. People like to be associated with a 'winner', so they will be more likely to want to do deals or joint ventures with you. Again, this increases your influence, and when you eventually DO try to sell something (indirectly, of course) customers will be much more likely to buy.

But how do you become 'influential'? One way is to combine Instagram with offline networking. For example, if you can bag a selfie with someone who is well known in your niche, and post it on Instagram, you'll have a legitimate excuse to tag them and include them in your feed. As a result, your content will then be seen by all of their followers - which can lead to lots more people following you. Pretty cool eh?
