The last year of World War II. The family of ten-year-old Klaus Wensloff lives dangerously. The father helps the persecuted, hides a Jewish family in the apartment, forges passports. At school, Klaus is at the mercy of Nazi propaganda, and his mother tries to give him hope for a better time with religious stories. Klaus can't find his way between the different ideologies. When the family is reported because of the hidden Jews and has to flee, Klaus is sent to a foster home in East Prussia. People leave him there with an infant when the Red Army approaches. He makes his way west, is picked up by Soviet soldiers, completely exhausted, and taken to a monastery. He gets into a confrontation with a Hitler youth which also lives there. In the end, the soldiers come back to take him to Berlin. The matron wants to keep him, but he decides to go with the soldiers.
