Associated Press reports that Hong Kong banned cannabidiol (CDB) on Feb. 1.
CBD is a non-psychoactive derivative of cannabis and is typically used for its stress-relieving and inflammation-reducing properties.
But according to Hong Kong officials, it's difficult to isolate pure CBD from cannabis, and there is a possibility of THC contamination during the process.
Additionally, the Hong Kong government says CBD can be easily converted into THC.
From now on, CBD possession can result in seven years of jail time and a $128,000 fine.
Anyone found guilty of importing,
exporting or producing CBD will face
life in prison and a $638,000 fine.
Many CBD-related businesses in Hong Kong have either had to shut down or remodel
their business plans as a result of the ban. .
