USDA Approves 'Lab-Grown' Meat , for US Consumption.
GOOD Meat and UPSIDE Foods each
received FDA approval on June 21 to sell their "cultivated" chicken products, Fox Business reports.
The companies' products are grown from animal cells in a lab, bypassing the need to raise and slaughter chickens.
Proponents say that in addition to addressing animal cruelty, the method can help to cut down on greenhouse gasses, which experts say contribute to global warming.
Instead of all of that land and all of that water that's used to feed all of these animals that are slaughtered, we can do it in a different way, Josh Tetrick, Eat Just co-founder and CEO, via statement.
GOOD Meat is real meat, made without tearing down a forest or taking a life. We’re the first and only company in the world to sell cultivated meat made from cells instead of slaughtered animals, Josh Tetrick, Eat Just co-founder and CEO, via statement.
GOOD Meat's product is
already being sold in Singapore.
If you're interested in trying
lab-grown chicken, you won't be able
to buy it in grocery stores just yet.
The companies will first test their
products at select restaurants.
UPSIDE's product will be used by
Michelin-star chef Dominique Crenn
at Bar Crenn in San Francisco.
