Taiwan is an island country located in East Asia, near the coast of mainland China. China has long claimed Taiwan as its own territory, and the two sides have been engaged in a tense standoff for decades. In recent years, China has stepped up its military activity around Taiwan, including sending fighter jets and bombers into Taiwan's air defence identification zone.
In response to the increased Chinese aggression, Taiwan has been beefing up its own defences. One of the key areas of focus has been the development of a drone-based defines system. Taiwan's military has been acquiring new drones from foreign suppliers, and it has also been investing in the development of its own indigenous drone technology.
In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. The invasion was a wake-up call for Taiwan, which saw how effective drones could be in modern warfare. Ukraine's use of drones to attack Russian tanks and other military assets was particularly impressive.
Inspired by Ukraine's success, Taiwan has accelerated its drone defence program. Though Taiwan is not as advanced as China in drone technology. In current state, China contains 50 different kinds of military drone, whereas, Taiwan have only four kinds of drones. In March 2022, President Tsai Ing-wen created a special team for to coordinate the development and deployment of drones for military purposes. The team includes representatives from Taiwan's military, government, and private sector.
The team has set a goal of developing 3,200 advanced military drones by 2024. These drones will be used to conduct surveillance, target enemy forces, and deliver weapons. The team is also working on developing drones that can be used to jam Chinese communications and radar.
