The first in-person BRICS summit since the pandemic is being hosted by South Africa in Johannesburg. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, President Xi Jinping of China and Brazil’s President Luiz Lula da Silva are expected to attend. Russian President Vladimir Putin is unlikely to attend due to a warrant for his arrest issued by the International Criminal Court for the alleged war crimes in Ukraine. However, he will attend virtually and will be represented in Johannesburg by the Russian Foreign Minister.
