Maui County in Hawaii has filed a lawsuit against Hawaiian Electric Co. and three related companies, claiming negligence for failing to shut off power despite warnings of potential fires. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants' powerlines sparked the Lahaina Fire, causing significant damage to properties and cultural sites. Hawaiian Electric is also facing other lawsuits for alleged failure to maintain its electrical infrastructure and not disclosing substandard wildfire prevention measures. The fires have resulted in casualties and extensive damage, estimated at $5 billion to rebuild Lahaina.
