Official description: Forty-seven large square plates of cold-rolled, weathered steel are laid out to form a rectangular area of 1 × 47 meters. The sculpture 47 Roaring Forties is one of a series of closely related pieces made by Carl Andre in 1988. All share the same material and the same size of basic unit, but the numbers of units vary (within the forties), and the proportions of the resulting rectangles vary accordingly.
Carl Andre (born 1935 in Quincy, Massachusetts) is one of the most important representatives on Minimal Art and has been exhibited with Konrad Fischer Galerie since 1967. A first solo exhibition in New York (1965) was followed by participation in the Documenta V and VII and numerous major shows worldwide. Andre lives and works in New York.
