Associate Professor Gwilym Croucher, from Melbourne's Higher Education Research Centre, believes the COVID pandemic has played a role Australia's decline in performance this sector. "Australia's closed borders for much of 2020 and 2021 had a clear negative impact in terms of reputation, as reflected in ranking performance," he told Times Higher Education. “While many top Australian universities have performed relatively well financially after the pandemic, an overall change in ranking positions may also reflect disruption to teaching and research caused by prolonged lockdowns,” he added.
