The FDA is proposing a ban on brominated vegetable oil due to evidence of potential health risks. BVO is used to prevent separation in certain beverages but has been found to negatively impact the thyroid gland and cause various health issues. Many beverage manufacturers have already removed BVO from their products, and California has banned it along with three other food ingredients. The FDA is also reassessing the safety of other food chemicals and creating a new office to streamline the evaluation process for additives. A decision on another food chemical, FD&C Red No. 3, is expected soon.
