Marvin Hagler turned pro in 1973, and won his 17 bouts. His first big win was against 1972 Olympic champion Suagar Ray Seales. A rematch with Seales in Hagler's 18th bout ended in a draw. Hagler won his next eight fights, then lost two out of his next three to Bobby Watts and Willy Monroe, both on points. He beat Monroe twice in rematches, and stopped Seales in the first round of their trilogy bout. Hagler's first shot at a world title ended in a draw against Vito Antuofermo. After three more wins, Hagler challenged new champion Alan Minter and stopped him in the third round due to cuts around the eyes. Hagler made ten defences of his middleweight crown, the most famous of which was a points win over Roberto Duran.

Thomas Hearns turned pro in 1977 and won his first 32 bouts. He won the WBA welterweight title in 1980, when he stopped José Cuevas in the second round. After three defences, he lost in the 14th round to WBC champion Sugar Ray Leonard. Hearns moved up in weight, and took the WBC light middleweight belt from Wilfred Benitez in a close points decision. He defended this title three times, with the most impressive win being a second round knockout of Roberto Duran in 1984.
