Upon reaching the finish line he slowed down sharply on the main straightaway, being struck by Cortés' Honda, coming from behind at an estimate speed of about 250 km/h (155 mi/h). Cortés died on the spot, while Ciccia succumbed to his injuries on the way to Dr. Juan Noé Hospital in Arica.
