Muhammad Ali vs Rudie Lubbers in a 12 round non-title heavyweight fight
Date: October 20, 1973
Venue: Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, Indonesia
Ali stance: orthodox
Lubbers stance: orthodox
Muhammad Ali suffered the second loss of his pro career when he was outpointed by Ken Norton, who broke his jaw and took his NABF title. Ali won an immediate rematch with a controversial points decision. A few weeks later, he travelled to Indonesia for what most observers felt was a "keep busy" fight.
Rudie Lubbers was a blown up light heavyweight who campaigned in the heavyweight division. He turned pro in 1970, and won his first 21 bouts against a series of journeymen. In his 22nd fight, he challenged Joe Bugner for the European heavyweight title and lost on points.
