An EF-3 tornado that killed at least one person and injured 25 in Louin, Mississippi, late Sunday, also leveled a large poultry farm, leaving an estimated 80,000 chickens unsheltered.
Mississippi Gov Tate Reeves said 72 homes were also damaged.
Footage recorded by Christian M Chevres Nevarez on Monday, June 19, shows the aftermath at the poultry farm in Jasper County, as massive flocks of chickens are seen fluttering in place or walking to shade a short distance away.
“It was sad to see what people lost,” Nevarez told Storyful of the destruction. He added that the tornado left “more than 1,000 chickens dead and more than 80,000 out in the open.”
The county sheriff’s department said the Jasper County Community Center had opened its doors to those displaced by the tornado activity and asked for donations.
On Tuesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson released a damage survey for the area, after identifying five tornado paths from Sunday night and Monday morning storms.
The NWS gave the tornado in Louin a rating of EF-3, reporting estimated peak winds of 150 miles per hour and a path length of 7.6 miles.
