Many Tesla charging stations in the Chicago area were not working properly due to the extremely cold weather, leaving drivers stranded. Drivers reported seeing at least 10 cars needing to be towed from that station alone due to dead batteries from the cold. Long waits and depleted batteries plagued electric vehicle drivers as only one charger functioned at a station, while over 20 Teslas faced over an hour's delay at congested nearby stations. The cold weather causes batteries to drain much faster as the car works to maintain a reasonable interior temperature.
