The FTC ruled TurboTax engaged in deceptive advertising by promoting "free" tax filing services that most customers did not qualify for. The agency banned TurboTax from advertising services as free unless they truly are free for all customers. TurboTax must also disclose terms, obligations, and the percentage of customers who qualify, if not most customers. About 4.4 million individuals were set to receive settlement checks from TurboTax after Intuit agreed to a 50-state settlement for reportedly diverting millions of low-income Americans from free tax services.
