Darwin Nunez scored a fine opening goal for Liverpool in their 4-1 win over Brentford on Saturday.

The forward ran through on goal just after the half-hour mark in a Liverpool counterattack that saw the forward chip the ball over Mark Flekken following a smart header from Diogo Jota.

He showed no signs of his finishing issues that have plagued him throughout much of his Liverpool career, though did leave his manager and team-mate nervous as he lifted the ball over the Brentford goalkeeper.

The goal came from a Brentford set-piece, with Flekken taking a free kick in his half and punting it long, with the ball in eventually cleared by Virgil van Dijk.

Jota ended up going head-to-head with Sergio Reguilon, getting the better of the full-back to tee up the striker, who was rushing forward unmarked in the middle of the pitch.

Nunez then closed in on the goal and left supporters with their hearts in their mouths as he lifted the ball into the back of the net before the away end erupted.

But it wasn't just the Liverpool fans who were left nervous over the finish. The camera showed manager Jurgen Klopp anxious as the Uruguayan made the audacious attempt, before fist-pumping in celebrations.

Cameras also picked up Jota, who had carried on running next to Nunez, shouting out in what appeared to be frustration given he was open for a tap in if Nunez had passed the ball sideways.

The Portugal star's emotions soon turned to joy, however, and he wheeled away next to Nunez in celebration of his side's opening goal.

Nunez has struggled with his finishing this season, netting nine Premier League goals from an expected goal of 12.58.

'How many times has Nunez missed a chance like that?' said one fan on X, formerly Twitter. 'Maybe this is him starting to take his chances when he’s got time to think. Outrageous finish.'

'Absolutely sensational from both Diogo Jota & Darwin Nunez,' another said. 'We love to see it.'

Both players who contributed to the goal were replaced before the second half.

Jota was taken off on a stretcher after appearing to suffer a knee injury, while Nunez was replaced at half-time.
