AMG's plug-in hybrid sedan gets power and style at a hefty premium price

If you're on the hunt for an extremely powerful luxury sedan, the Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance will probably be your go-to. The most powerful version of the S-Class yet could become even more exciting with help from Brabus, which offers a range of exterior, interior and performance upgrades.

The modified Mercedes-AMG adopts the Brabus 930 name as an indication of what's under the hood. The plug-in hybrid powertrain produces 917 hp (684 kW / 930 PS) and 1,510 Nm (1,114 lb-ft) of torque, an increase of 126 hp (94 kW / 128 PS) and 80 Nm (59 lb-ft). Thanks to the addition of the Brabus PowerXtra B40E-930 module to the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine, more torque is achieved compared to the stock version, leaving the electric motor intact. Power is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission.

According to the German tuner, the approximately 2.6-ton (5,732 lbs) sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds, 0.1 second faster than standard, while the top speed is electronically 290 km/h It is limited to /hour (180 miles/hour).

The Brabus 930 also looks sportier than any factory S-Class, but adopts a more restrained body kit compared to the rival Mansory build. Carbon fiber add-ons include a front splitter, bumper intake fascia, a new grille with integrated "RamAir" intakes, side skirts, a lip spoiler and a larger diffuser with quad exhaust pipes. The latter can produce an angrier sound on demand, thanks to the actively controlled butterfly valves of the Brabus sports exhaust system.

The full-size luxury sedan now sits on 22-inch Brabus Monoblock ZM "Platinum Edition" forged wheels, a suitable option for the S-Class, especially in this blacked-out configuration. Additionally, the Brabus SportXtra suspension module reduces ride by up to 10 mm (0.4 in) depending on the riding mode.

The interior of the Brabus S63 benefits from the "Masterpiece" interior package with high-quality leather upholstery with seashell diamond quilting pattern. We can see two different interior configurations, one in black and the other in sky blue. In both cases, the cabin is covered in carbon fiber and bears plenty of Brabus badging. Finally, the heritage and “77” logos refer to the tuner's founding date of 1977.

Brabus says pricing for its latest offering starts at €405,000 ($442,855) before tax in Germany. The example pictured is listed for €479,889 ($524,958), which is a hefty premium over the stock model. The stock Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance starts at €208,393 ($227,978) before options.
