As Rwanda approaches the 30th anniversary of the 1994 genocide, a group of young Rwandan artists is helping to preserve the memory of the 800,000 victims by creating portraits of some of them copied from old and often damaged photographs. The illustrators, who were not even born when the genocide took place, say participating in the project has given them a new insight into their country's deeply painful past, including through the "privilege" of talking to survivors. "I've learned a lot," says King Ngabo, the Kigali-based artist who founded the initiative which has so far produced around 450 portaits of genocide victims.
