Julius Caesar of Rome
The Misunderstood Roman Dictator
So proud of his morality and his undisputed success that he truly believed that he alone was the best solution for his own people.
Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus, best known as Brutus. Such a treacherous character.
Caesar pardoned him after he sided with Pompey during the civil war (49–45 BC).
Pompey, who during Brutus' early political career, was responsible for the death of his father.
However, as Caesar avoided using the law to hold Pompey accountable, and thus caused greater conflicts with the Roman elite and the Senate, Brutus eventually sided with Pompey against Caesar's forces during the civil war.
Pompey was defeated at the battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC, after which Brutus surrendered to Caesar, who granted him amnesty. Pompey's army was disintegrated.
He fled to Egypt, where he was assassinated upon arrival.
In 46 BC Caesar appoints Brutus governor of Cisalpine Gaul, before defeating the remnants of the Pompeians at Thapsus in April. In 45 BC Caesar appoints him praetor urbanus for the next year.
And in that year, 44 BC, Caesar takes title of dictator perpetuo.
Brutus and the other liberatores assassinate Caesar on the ides of March.
