Coordinated attacks occurred at a synagogue and Orthodox church in two cities - Derbent and Makhachkala - in southern Russia's Dagestan region on Sunday. At least 9 people were killed, including 7 police officers. An additional 25 people were injured. A gun battle between police and suspects was ongoing in Makhachkala on Sunday night. The regional leader established an operational headquarters to respond to and investigate the attacks. The nature and motivation behind the coordinated attacks are still under investigation.
