Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition that gradually blurs your central vision. It occurs when the macula, a small part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision, deteriorates. While AMD doesn't cause total blindness, it can significantly impact daily activities like reading and recognizing faces.
There are two main types: dryand wet. Dry AMD is the most common and involves the gradual breakdown of the macula. Wet AMD is less common but progresses more rapidly, involving abnormal blood vessels that grow under the macula.
Symptoms of AMD may include:
Blurred central vision
A blind spot in your central vision
Distorted vision
Difficulty recognizing faces
Difficulty seeing at night
Risk factors for AMD include age, family history, smoking, and being overweight.
