Browsea Island is a nature lover's paradise. From the moment, I stepped off the ferry, childhood memories came flooding in, as well as anticipation for what would be one of my favourite outings this year.
I started my adventure with a walk through the lush woodlands as I decided the East side would be best to explore first. The trees were towering above with the odd lookout point from time to time of the beaches below. The air was filled with the scent of pine and wildflowers, making it so refreshing to be surrounded by nature.
One of the highlights, I was hoping for, was spotting the famous red squirrels. Unfortunately, they proved elusive this time around!
Despite, keeping my eyes well and truly peeled, I didn't manage to catch a glimpse of these little guys.
However, the island still had plenty more to offer. I visited the lagoon, which is a haven for bird watchers. The variety of birds was incredible, from elegant egrets to colourful kingfishers, and peacocks. I could have spent hours hours just sitting there, watching the birds go about their day.
There was a section called Calming Cambridge Woods Forest Bathing Trail. A trail dedicated to the Japanese practice of Shinrin Yoku which is simply immersing yourself in nature using all of your senses. There were parts that invited you to unwind and mindfully connect with nature which I thoroughly enjoyed.♂️
In terms of architecture and history, I visited St. Mary's Church that is nestled among trees. It felt like a hidden sanctuary. I took a moment to sit inside and just soak in the tranquility.⛪️
The 16th century castle isn't opened to the public. It is currently leased to John Lewis Partnership and is today used as a corporate hotel by its employees.
Of course, I cannot finish without mentioning that Brownsea Island is recognised as the birthplace of scouting where Baden-Powell set up the first scout camp. I can certainly see why he chose such a place. I was a scout when I was 11 years old and always remember my time in it fondly.⛺️
The day ended with me having a deserved hot chocolate at the visitor centre's café. It was a perfect way to wrap up my visit, enjoying a warm drink while reflecting about my day on the island.☕️
Thanks everyone!!! Have a fantastic week!
