Sentencing Moved to Post-Election Date
Originally scheduled for September 18, Trump’s sentencing has now been pushed to November 26—three weeks after Election Day, which falls on November 5. Judge Juan M. Merchan made the decision to avoid any perception that the case could interfere with or influence the outcome of the upcoming election. The new sentencing date lands just before Thanksgiving.

Merchan emphasized the importance of maintaining the court's impartiality, stating that the delay should "dispel any suggestion" of political bias.

Trump’s Legal Team Pushes for Delay
Trump’s legal team argued that sentencing him during the final stretch of his campaign would be detrimental and could be perceived as election interference. They also hope this delay will allow time for Judge Merchan to rule on their request to overturn Trump’s conviction on the grounds of presidential immunity, a ruling the court will consider by November 12.

Additionally, Trump’s lawyers sought intervention from a federal court to move the case out of state court, but their request was denied earlier in the week. The legal team is now appealing that decision to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Legal Wins for Trump
This latest ruling marks another legal victory for Trump in a series of favorable outcomes. In July, a federal case in Florida accusing him of mishandling classified documents was dismissed, and a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity will likely slow proceedings in another federal case accusing Trump of trying to overturn the 2020 election.
