House Speaker Mike Johnson canceled a vote on a stopgap funding bill Wednesday after facing opposition from over a dozen Republicans, delaying efforts to avoid a government shutdown. Johnson, who leads a razor-thin GOP majority, said he will work through the weekend to build consensus. The government will partially shut down on October 1st without a funding deal. Former President Donald Trump posted a message on Truth Social after the presidential debate, urging House Republicans to reject the bill. He stated that “THE DEMOCRATS ARE TRYING TO ‘STUFF’ VOTER REGISTRATIONS WITH ILLEGAL ALIENS."
