New York Times reporter Thomas Gibbons-Neff interviewed Ryan Wesley Routh while researching foreign fighters in Ukraine last year. Routh is currently under FBI investigation for an alleged assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.  Routh, who had no military experience, was driven by a desire to support Ukraine, even though he acknowledged being out of his depth. During his brief conversation with Gibbons-Neff, Routh discussed far-fetched plans involving forging documents, bribing officials, and arranging U.S. military flights to transport Afghan fighters.
