Welcome to the fortieth episode of the Minutes Mastery series by Triumph through Training Pvt. Ltd. (3T)! In this episode, Dr. Veena K. Arora explores Hubris Syndrome, a psychological condition where the accumulation of power corrupts decision-making, leading to reckless and arrogant behavior.
Coined by Dr. David Owen and Dr. Jonathan Davidson from Duke University, Hubris Syndrome occurs when leaders, after prolonged exposure to power, become overconfident, detached from reality, and immune to criticism. This detachment can result in poor decisions, isolation, and ultimately, the leader’s downfall.
Dr. Arora illustrates this with the famous character Subhash Nagre, played by Amitabh Bachchan in the Indian film Sarkar. Starting as a righteous leader, Nagre eventually becomes authoritarian and isolated as his hubris grows. Real-life leaders experience similar patterns, as research published in Leadership Quarterly in 2018 shows that 20% of leaders exhibit hubristic tendencies after five years in power.
So, how can leaders avoid the trap of hubris? Dr. Arora emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, accountability, and surrounding oneself with people who offer genuine feedback and challenge decisions when necessary.
We acknowledge Dr. David Owen, Dr. Jonathan Davidson, Duke University, Amitabh Bachchan, and Leadership Quarterly for their contributions to this insightful discussion.
