Fethullah Gulen, the U.S.-based cleric accused of orchestrating Türkiye’s failed 2016 coup, has died at 83.
Once a close ally of President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the two had a dramatic falling out, with Erdoğan blaming Gulen for the attempted coup that claimed 250 lives.
Gulen, who denied involvement, lived in self-imposed exile in the U.S. since 1999. His Hizmet movement, known for promoting education and moderate Islam, was dismantled in Türkiye following the coup. Gulen passed away in a U.S. hospital after years of declining health.
