Russia launched a massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine early Thursday, targeting energy infrastructure across the country, including in western regions, officials said. The strikes disrupted power for more than a million people.
Ukraine's air force reported shooting down 79 of 91 missiles and 35 drones. Strikes hit multiple areas, including Volyn, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Khmelnytskyi, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, and Zhytomyr.
Despite targeting Kyiv, officials confirmed all missiles and drones directed at the capital were intercepted.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched around 100 drones and over 90 missiles in the attack. Officials noted this was the 11th major strike on Ukraine's power grid since March, with about half of Ukraine's power generation capacity damaged.
Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed the assault was in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory with Western-supplied missiles.
