Police deployed water cannons to disperse protesters outside Georgia's Parliament in Tbilisi late Thursday after the government suspended its EU membership bid for four years.

Riot officers moved in after midnight to clear the crowd, with similar demonstrations reported in other cities.

The decision to halt EU negotiations came shortly after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze was reappointed by the ruling Georgian Dream party, sparking nationwide protests.
